Letter to my Past Self

Dear 14 year old Royse,

It's been a while, hasn't it? A lot has happened since I last saw you. You're a freshman in high school. Four years seems like quite a long time ago. So much has happened and we have changed drastically since then. As a freshman, you are so quiet and awkward. I know that you don't have much faith in yourself in athletics or academics. Let me tell you that you have so much potential and talent. Over the next four years you will grow into your quirky personality! I know that you are sitting in your first period English class right now, looking around, wondering how you will ever become friends with all of these new people. Fourteen year old Royse, you might as well know that some of those people are rude and obnoxious. But more than a few of them will become some of your closest friends! There are so many amazing and interesting people you will come across during your high school career. These friends you acquire will make you a better person. They will bring out your best side and force you to become the person you've always wanted to be.

As a high school freshman, you aren't very sure of who you are. No one is! Not a single freshman really understands where they stand on the social ladder in high school. Do not let this uncertainty get you down. You underestimate your abilities. When you put your mind to it, you can and will do whatever you want.

Failure is inevitable in life and especially in high school. I know that there will be things that don't go the way you expect them to, however, be aware that these hurdles will lead to amazing rewards! I don't want to spoil anything for you, but don't quit golf. I know that you feel like you don't fit in, but some awesome things are going to come from it. Golf will lead you to some of your best friends. You are going to experience the unforgettable moments through your days on the golf team. On a side note, maybe steer away from Advanced Placement Chemistry. Or take the class and learn that everything in life doesn't come simply.

You are going to lose friends through high school. They are going to be people that you thought would be friends forever, but people change and sometimes it is best to distance yourself from those who bring you unhappiness. There are going to be boys who lead you on and then change their minds. To be honest, who needs a boyfriend in high school anyway?

My biggest piece of advice is to say "Yes" to the opportunities that come up! I know that for the first year of high school, you preferred to stay home on the weekends. You don't know what you are missing! From here on out, say yes when your friends invite you to the movies, football games, and dinner. You only have so much time to spend with your high school friends, so be social and happy and have fun!
Fourteen year old Royse, you are going to have such a great high school career. Everything will turn out okay, especially when you think it isn't going to be okay. On the nights when you are pulling your hair out with stress, remember that eighteen year old Royse made it through. You will make it through with some of the best memories of school and the people you met along the way!
